Fitness Friday: Creating an Injury-Free Body

Creating an Injury-Free Body
So you have decided to get in shape and have started exercising but your knee is bothering you, or maybe your neck hurts after your workout. What's going on and what should you do about it?I have a hard time going to the gym or watching a boot camp take place because so many times I see people working with such poor form it makes me cringe. Not every class or person in the gym of course but enough that I realize I will have job security for years to come! It seems that each week I get new clients coming into the studio complaining of knee, back, shoulder or neck issues or injuries all stemming from improper form. Some come from boot camps or other extreme forms of exercise programs, some come from personal trainers, some come from the gym and others just work out on their own. All have one thing in common, they were not working from the right places or in the right way and are now in pain.
The most vulnerable are ones new to exercise or the people that have been away from it for some time. Unless you are a seasoned professional it's hard to tell if you are aligned correctly or if your shoulders are hiked up etc. You need a good set of eyes on you, someone that can correct and modify the exercise to help you get the most from it and stay injury free. While group exercise classes are great, usually there are just too many people in the class for the instructor to give the hands on training needed to help insure that everyone is working correctly all the time. Finding the right person to help you achieve proper form is very important. Once you have been trained to know and understand how to exercise correctly it's so much easier to take classes or work on your own. If possible seek out a professional to help train you to listen to your body, work correctly, and know how to modify the exercise if needed.
When looking for an instructor or personal trainer take the following into consideration:
- Does the trainer/instructor ask you questions about injuries or pain you are having? Do they ask you every time they see you how you are feeling and if anything has changed?
- Do they look at how you walk, stand, sit? And do they show you how you should be properly doing all of those things?
- Do they check for imbalances in the body? Do they have you do exercises that work each side independently and do they do more work on the weaker side to create balance?
- Do they check your foot, knee and shoulder alignment when you squat, plank or lunge? Do they line them up correctly and make sure you are working equally from inner thigh to outer thigh, from the core muscle group?
- Do they modify the exercises for your needs, not just make you do a cookie cutter set of moves?
- Do you feel like you have worked the whole body and leave feeling good without pain or injury?
- Do they work oppositional muscles groups and make sure you stretch oppositionally as well?
My clients know that I get on my soap box about correct alignment and posture in exercise. They listen to me as I go over how they should be standing, or how their feet should be aligned, or even how the core muscles need to work instead of the neck or shoulders. Once they see the difference it makes in their bodies they are amazed about how long they have been working from the wrong places and never knew. These elements are key to achieve optimal performance and stay injury free. A body in stress and out of alignment will continue to stress and eventually break down.

Book Club: The Night Circus

What have you done for yourself lately? Why not take some time out of your busy schedule to read a good book and discuss it with your fellow mommies! The LakeNormanMommies Book Club is a great way to tickle your brain cells and meet new moms! This month we are reading and discussing The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway—a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them, this is a game in which only one can be left standing, and the circus is but the stage for a remarkable battle of imagination and will. Despite themselves, however, Celia and Marco tumble headfirst into love—a deep, magical love that makes the lights flicker and the room grow warm whenever they so much as brush hands.
True love or not, the game must play out, and the fates of everyone involved, from the cast of extraordinary circus performers to the patrons, hang in the balance, suspended as precariously as the daring acrobats overhead.
